In 2014, Apple announced and launched the iPad Mini 3, a successor to the iPad mini 2 which many thought was a disappointment sweep.

This stems from the iPad Mini 3 being essentially the exact same model as the mini iPad 2 with the difference between the two being marginal at best. According to a new report Macotakar, however, Apple may be changing his tone toward the smaller iPad and actually looking to upgrade the next version of the tablet.

According to the report, citing unnamed sources, the device that publication called the "mini iPad 4", the new tablet will feature an A8 processor under the hood, along with 802.11ac Wi-Fi. If those specs sound familiar, it's because it's the same hardware found inside Apple iPhone iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. Still missing the A8X processor that is currently available in the air iPad 2, but at least be a processor upgrade A7 Mini iPad 3 (and mini iPad 2) is equipped with.

The report does not indicate when Apple may be timing this release, but if Apple is indeed considering an upgrade mid season iPad mini, but has better specs, it may not sit well with some people. Especially those who might have actually bought a mini-iPad 3, just so they could have Touch ID. Of course, wait until the end of the year, when Apple usually refreshes the iPad lineup, it might make more sense, especially if the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 internal Plus being used for the new iPad mini.
